Gouche and Collage
This piece consists of panels made of book covers. The sequence scroll is supported by these panels. In doing this particular narrative I was inspired by Chinese cave paintings. In the reference images mountains were faded suggestions of landscape. This ghost-like quality was the inspiration for minimal paint in my piece. The collaged old paper adds subtle changes of shading to the surface. In contrast, the dramatic blue mountain, pyramid with a red line, and the torn edges suggest a formal narrative. Figures gaze at each other across the water wondering the purpose of their journey. This piece is about bringing together separate worlds into a single landscape, like the Milky Way. These separate worlds are the everyday (me ice fishing) and the exotic (camel rider).
The river that flows between them is a symbol of communication. They see each other but cannot connect. Chimneys sit in the mountains reading more as smoking towers than residencies. I use chimneys, not as a reminder of buildings but a passage way into other worlds.
